MORNING NEWS AUDITORIAL | 5th August, 2019

Good Morning,

YEH DOSTI

The weekend saw rain creating havoc across India especially Maharashtra, Indian Government wreaking panic in the state of Jammu & Kashmir and of course Israel PM wishing PM Modi happy friendship day with Yeh Dosti Ham Nahi Todenge.

And when Israel is your best friend, then turning Kashmir into Palestine is not so out of reach of imagination.

INDIA PUTS KASHMIR UNDER ARREST

It is 5th August and not sure what dread will follow in the day. Imagine being locked down in your house, with no internet, no landline, limited rations, and you don’t even know why you are in that situation and when will this end. The mind will imagine, rely on rumours and fear and feel extremely helpless. And for what? Because of two and a half men with chequered past and a quasi-religious social organisation which has an ideological agenda very different than the state of India envisioned by its founders.

Amid dramatic late-night developments in Jammu and Kashmir, with several of the state’s top political leaders, including Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and Sajad Lone being put under house arrest, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher tweeted, saying “Kashmir Solution has begun.” The Nazis used the term Endlösung, or Final Solution, as the “answer” to the “Jewish question.”

There are people who rejoice on other people’s suffering, and not a Kashmiri refugee Kher is definitely one amongst many that are gloating and feeling glee over the suffering of fellow citizens. The Union cabinet will meet at the official residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday morning amid rising tensions in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jammu & Kashmir government late Sunday night imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC in Srinagar district with immediate effect from Monday midnight ie 5 August and said it will continue to remain in force until further orders. Late Sunday evening, mobile, broadband internet and cable TV services were suspended in Srinagar.

The order comes minutes after mainstream leaders in the state including former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah were placed under house arrest.

Kashmir has been theorising about possible plans to revoke the state’s special status, trifurcate it or to redraw its constituencies’ boundaries. Now many are conjecturing there could be an external angle too, involving Pakistan.

Now whatever is the case, we will probably know before the day is over. From my end, peace is all we can hope for.

MOHANDAS PAI AND KIRAN MAZUMDAR SHAW COMPLAIN ABOUT TAX TERRORISM AND THE INTIMIDATING ‘PHONE CALLS’

And onto stranger things like Mohandas, not the Gandhi, but Pai, a rabid person usually, also a supporter of Demonetisation amongst other things, now has suddenly woken up to tax terrorism because the same unilateralism he was so supportive of came knocking to his own door asking for money.

In an interview to NDTV, Mr Pai said “tax terrorism is the biggest threat to the ease of doing business in India” and despite the government’s promise to end it, “unnecessary tax litigation is still rampant” which is not allowing the country to achieve its potential.

Mr Pai confirmed to NDTV that Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has been told by “a government official” not to speak about issues such as income tax harassment. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has also admitted this, The Telegraph reported.

Well, Kashmir and Economy are the two critical things this morning, attention to one will take away attention from the other. Your guess is as good as mine which one will be a priority.

So onto International news,

USA FACES HOMEGROWN WHITE TERRORISM AS TWO MASS SHOOTINGS LEAVE 29 DEAD

Donald Trump faced a barrage of criticism on Sunday as the US reeled from a brutal mass shooting in the border city of El Paso, Texas, on Saturday, linked to white nationalism and anti-immigrant hate rhetoric.

Less than 13 hours later another mass shooting took place in the city of Dayton, Ohio, leaving nine dead there and bringing the total injured from both shootings to at least 52.

Authorities in Dayton named the shooter as 24-year-old Connor Betts and listed the names of the nine people killed, which included the shooter’s 22-year-old sister Megan Betts.

HONG KONG BROUGHT TO A STANDSTILL, MORE THAN 150 FLIGHTS CANCELLED

Amidst all this, let me also mention the Hongkong protests or mass civil disobedience.

Transport across Hong Kong has been brought to a standstill and more than 150 flights out of the city have been cancelled due to a city-wide strike, as protesters and residents engaged in mass civil disobedience and now they are also joined in by the civil servants.

The former British colony, which reverted to Chinese control in 1997, is meant to enjoy a “high degree” of autonomy from the mainland as part of the “one country, two systems” framework, but residents say their freedoms are slowly disappearing under China’s influence.

HUGE OUTAGE HITS JAKARTA AND SURROUNDING AREA

While HongKong citizens were trying to fight for power; citizens of Jakarta were also fighting for power, the electric one.

Power has been mostly restored to Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, and nearby cities, 12 hours after a huge blackout began on Sunday.

The outage hit tens of millions of people, and Jakarta’s newly-opened metro system was evacuated.

BRAZIL GANG LEADER TRIES TO BREAK JAIL DRESSING UP AS TEENAGE DAUGHTER

And before I say goodbye, here is news very different from the clouds of despondency.

A Brazilian gang leader tried to escape from prison by pretending to be his teenage daughter when she visited him behind bars, authorities said on Sunday.

Clauvino da Silva, also known as “Shorty”, tried to leave the prison in the western part of Rio de Janeiro dressed in her clothes, but his nervousness gave him away, prison officials said.

His plan was apparently to leave his 19-year-old daughter inside the jail.

And with that we take your leave wishing you a safe and productive day and also hoping that Kashmir normalizes soon and we stay humans. Good bye from takeapart.in
